Senior Plant Design Engineer

We have a vacancy for a Senior Plant Design Engineer to join our existing team in Colchester.  The main purpose of the role is the delivery of design and technical EHV and HV electrical substation primary plant projects, both in the UK and internationally.

The main duties will include:

  • Delivery of substation primary plant design projects to targeted levels of profitability, quality and timeliness.  This may involve the direction of engineers within the team.
  • Seek out innovative solutions to technical problems.
  • Advice and design work for primary plant, including transformers, GIS and AIS switchgear cables and all substation equipment.
  • Ensure an active safety culture is created and maintain a safe working environment at all times.  Operate within the quality assurance manual of BPI or an established project management methodology which ensures the maintenance of equivalent standards.
  • Attend design reviews to ensure that discipline and excellence is maintained.
  • Maintain close working relationship with the Finance Management team.  Capture any additional business development opportunities which may arise during project delivery.
  • Preparation, monitoring and delivery of the cost budget for projects. 

Skills & Experience:

  • Sound analytical and numerical skills including short circuit forces calculation, cable rating calculations, short circuit current calculations and lightning protection calculations.
  • Solid understanding of the interface requirements of the civil/structural and OHL aspects of HV substations.
  • ‘Can do’ attitude, with previous experience in mentoring and coaching junior colleagues.
  • Should be responsible for project delivery 80% of times independently.
  • Clearance diagrams, access drawings.
  • Earthing experience desirable.
  • Writing technical proposals.
  • Good understanding of primary calculations.

Senior Protection & Control Design Engineer

We have a new vacancy for a Senior Protection & Control Design Engineer to join our existing team. The main purpose of the role is the design and specification of Protection and Control systems for a number of Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and private clients. The successful candidate could be based at our Wakefield, Boldon or Colchester offices. Due to the nature and size of the business, there may also be opportunities to work on overseas projects.

The main duties will include:

  • Producing designs for substation Protection and Control systems from 11kV up to 132kV (Single Line Diagrams, Circuit Diagrams, General Arrangements, Wiring Diagrams, Block Cable Diagrams/Schedules, cable specification/sizing calculations, etc.).
  • Carry out design reviews to ensure that discipline and standards are maintained.
  • Producing specifications for substation Protection and Control systems from 11kV up to 132kV.
  • Preparation, monitoring and delivery of cost budget for the team including utilisation and resource planning.
  • Maintaining close working relationship with the Project Management team. 
  • Working alongside other designers, construction professionals and engineering teams. 
  • Liaising with the Power Systems, Primary and Civil design departments to ensure that all objectives are met and that the best possible design is submitted. 
  • Liaising with external stakeholders, including the end client, other design houses and consultancies as well as other internal departments.

Skills & Experience:

  • Ideally qualified to degree level in an appropriate discipline. 
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience designing Protection and Control systems up to 132kV. 
  • Good understanding of power industry (particularly UK) including technical standards. 
  • Competent with relevant software: Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Raster Design, etc.. 
  • Ability to work in a team environment and adhere to budgets and programmes. 
  • Good communication skills.
  • Good leadership skills.

Project Manager - Design

We have a vacancy for a Design Project Manager to join our Colchester office.  The Project Manager will be responsible for delivering a portfolio of design projects associated with construction, refurbishment, and maintenance projects on Power Distribution and Transmission networks and connection projects.

The main duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Project manage the end to end process from Stage 1 application through to project opening and final payment, including for design reviews, financial reviews and customer meetings. 
  • Understanding of customer technical and contractual requirements. 
  • Motivating and facilitating engineers to ensure that customer requirements are delivered within budget and on time. 
  • Reporting project progress to the Head of Project Management Office. 
  • Support with liaising with internal and external clients to answer technical queries. 
  • Proactively manage changes in project scope, identify potential crises and devise contingency plans. 
  • Assisting sales with the writing of bid documents. 
  • Develop and deliver progress reports, requirements documentation and presentations. 

Skills & Experience:

  • Project management experience delivering to budget, time and quality restraints.
  • Thorough understanding of HV electrical engineering in a major projects environment. 
  • Commercially and contractually astute with a knowledge of the NEC3 contracts or similar. 
  • Problem-solving, analytical and communication abilities. 
  • An understanding of Distribution Network Operator (DNO) harmonized design standards would be advantageous. 
  • Confident in dealing with people at all levels and ability to influence. 

Qualifications required:

  • MSc/BSc/BEng in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering or similar 
  • A recognised project management qualification
